LG V20: How To Unlock Bootloader, Install TWRP and Root

As you already know that it’s never easy to root LG smart Android based devices. We don’t always get easy root methods to achieve root access, and this is the main reason several LG devices stay without rooted for so long. And if you own carrier locked LG V20 devices like Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T then it takes extra hard work. But finally developers came up with a working method to root LG V20 devices.

Luckily the senior XDA user me2151 along with other renowned developers now finally managed to root LG V20 devices from carriers like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and Korean variants via “Dirty Santa” exploit. This complicated rooting process requires your full concentration to make through the lengthy process. First you need to replace the default bootloader with a debug bootloader in order to unlock bootloader. Then flash TWRP and SuperSU to achieve root access on your LG V20. It’s understood that you’ll obviously lose warranty of your LG V20, and the flashing steps can be tricky. But we believe you already know what happen in this kind of root process, and you might have already prepared your mind to root your LG V20. Before starting with this step-by-step guide, it’s necessary for you to know some of the known issues you will face after rooting your LG V20. So, please take a look.

Some Known Issues:

  • AM & FM Radio feature will not work.
  • Slow booting.
  • You can’t go back to stock.
  • Comfort view no longer works on Sprint variant.
  • Do not update the Youtube app because if you update it, it will not work. But if you have already updated the Youtube app, just uninstall the update from Play Store.

So, if you think you can live without these features and still wants to enjoy the root privileges, then let’s start with the tutorial.

Please Note: This step-by-step tutorial works only on following LG V20 variants. So, don’t apply the steps on this tutorial on any other variant unless you want to brick your V20.

  • Verizon (VS995)
  • Sprint (LS997)
  • AT&T (H910)
  • Korean (F800L)

Kindly download all necessary files and follow the instructions carefully.


  • Open phone Settings >> Tap on About phone >> Then tap on Build number 7 times to enable the Developer options. In Developer options enable USB Debugging and OEM unlocking.
  • Perform a complete backup of your device data as the process will format your entire device data.
  • Make sure your device is fully charge.


Following are the links of the files you’ll need to root your LG V20 on AT&T and Verizon. Download all files on your PC and then transfer these required files to your device.

How to Unlock Bootloader, Install TWRP and Root LG V20

The process of rooting LG V20 is bit lengthy, so we split it into parts for your ease and convenience. Please follow all the step carefully and go through entire tutorial before starting the process.

Unlock the Bootloader

1. Download and extract the “V20 root files” in ADB folder.

2. Download the TWRP image and move it to the same folder.

3. Transfer SuperSU zip to SDcard.

4. Use the stock USB cable to connect your device to PC and to check the connection status push the following command.

  • adb devices

5. If the device and PC connection established successfully, you’ll receive device ID number.

6. Execute the “RUNMEFIRST.bat” file on your PC, it will open the log window, don’t close that log window.

7. Execute “Step1.bat”.

Note: Ignore the permission denied message for Flatland and Flatlnd64.

8. On the command prompt of Step1.bat window, push the following command:

  • run-as con
  • chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*

9. Launch terminal emulator app on your phone and type “id” and press enter. The context parameter output should be “Untrusted app”. If the context parameter is not “Untrusted app”, repeat the process from Step 1.


10. Type the following command in terminal emulator and hit the enter.

  • applypatch /system/bin/atd /storage/emulated/0/dirtysanta

11. RUNMEFIRST window will tell you to execute Step2.bat file. Just simply execute the “Step2.bat” by double-clicking on it.

12. Once the Step2.bat command executed successfully, your device will be in bootloader with an unlocked bootloader.

Note: In Verizon variants the vibrator might constantly buzz till the end of the process. Don’t worry about it, it’s a normal alert.

Install TWRP and Root

Please follow all the steps carefully, we have already highlighted some of the steps only for specific variants, so don’t apply them on other LG V20 variants.

1. The “Step3.bat” will flash the TWRP and boot.img on your device. Double-click on it to execute it.

Note: If you receive the message, “<waiting for devices>,” you need to install the fastboot drivers on your PC.

2. Now your device will boot into Android. Push the following command to put your device into recovery mode.

  • adb reboot recovery

3. (Only for Sprint) In general, you’ll encounter app crash problem. To resolve this problem, go back to bootloader mode by removing and reinserting battery, then press “Volume Down” key while plugging the phone into your PC. Push the following commands via command prompt.

  • fastboot erase system
  • fastboot reboot

4. The above second command will reboot your LG V20 to an LG Screen. Check the connectivity status using “adb devices” command. Then push the below command to go into recovery.

  • adb reboot recovery

5. In TWRP, press Cancel on the password prompt and “swipe to allow system modifications.”


6. Only for Verizon & AT&T: Follow the below steps if your device model number is VS995 or H910.

  • Flash the SuperSU zip.
  • In TWRP, Wipe >> Format Data >> Type “yes” to continue.
  • Return back to Wipe >> Advanced >> Select “Dalvik cache, data and cache” >> swipe to wipe.
  • Return back to the TWRP main menu >> Reboot >> System.

7. Only for Sprint: In the previous steps you’ve wiped the system partition, so now you need to flash the stock deodexed ROM. Follow the steps below:

  • Go to Wipe >> Advanced >> Select “Dalvik cache, data, system, and cache” >> swipe to wipe.
  • In TWRP, Wipe >> Format Data >> Type “yes” to continue.
  • Go to the TWRP main menu >> Install >> Flash the “LS997-deODEXd-signed.zip” file.
  • Flash the SuperSU zip as well.
  • Return back to the TWRP main menu >> Reboot >> System.

That’s all!

Congrats! You’ve successfully installed TWRP and rooted your LG V20.


For Verizon: If you’re experiencing slow booting, switch to bootloader mode and push the below command to the flash the boot image.

  • fastboot flash boot boot2.img
  • fastboot reboot

For all other variants: If you see a “Secure boot password” at first boot, it means you didn’t format data properly. So, go back to recovery mode and format data once again to decrypt your device.

On the next boot, get into the bootloader mode and push the below commands to flash the boot image to resolve the battery drain and random app crashes.

Note: You’ll need to enable the USB debugging once again.

  • fastboot flash boot boot2.img
  • fastboot reboot

IF you didn’t find your device rooted, reboot the device and get into recovery and from the recovery flash SuperSU zip to regain root.
