How to Install Flashable Zips using Custom Recovery

In this step by step guide we will show you how to flash Zip files using the most popular custom recoveries; CWM, TWRP, Philz. So follow the steps based on the custom recovery installed on your device.

Install Flashable Zips using CWM Recovery

There are two main variants of CWM recovery – touch and non-touch, the touch based version is same as any other Android app but in non-touch version you need to use hardware keys:

  • Volume Up and Volume Down keys for Naviagtion
  • Power key for Selecting the Options

Note: The functions of the hardware key may vary with device.

1. Visit the Official CWM website to download and install the recovery on your device or install any unofficial build which you can easily find on XDA forums and other development forums.

2. Once recovery is installed, boot device into CWM Recovery by pressing hardware combination keys or using any 3rd party app.

3. There are several options available in CWM recovery. Select ‘Install Zip’ option.

4. It will redirect you to the sub-menu where you will find few more options. Now select the option according to the Zip file location.

5. Browse Zip file and select it.

6. Confirm the action to flash zip file.

7. Once installed, reboot to system.

Install Flashable Zips using TWRP Recovery

TWRP is a touch-based recovery, so it doesn’t requires hardware keys to work. Follow all the steps carefully to flash the Zip file on your device using TWRP.

1. Visit Official TWRP website to download and install recovery on your device. Some other unofficial builds are also available on XDA forums and other Android development forums.

2. Once installed, boot device into TWRP Recovery by pressing the hardware key combination or using any 3rd party app.

3. In the main menu of TWRP recovery, select Install, it will open an in-built file manager. Select the Zip file via file manager.

4. After selecting the Zip file, it will ask for the confirmation. Swipe where appropriate to confirm the action.

5. After flashing the Zip file, you’ll see options to reboot the device or return back to the main menu. Select Reboot System.

Note: In case of Custom roms and some mods, you need to wipe partitions like cache, dalvik-cache and may be sometimes system partition. TWRP automatically gives you option to Wipe Cache/Dalvik Cache after the Zip is flashed. Please do check for these wipes on the developers forum where you found the Zip file. Perform wipes only if required.

Install Flashable Zips using Philz Recovery

Philz is another most popular recovery and it’s more advance than CWM recovery because it offers more features and customization options. Follow the steps carefully to install flashable Zips on your device using Philz recovery.

1. Download and install the appropriate Philz recovery for you device from any Android development forum.

2. Once installed, boot device into Philz recovery by pressing the hardware key combination or using any 3rd party app.

3. In the main menu of Philz recovery, select Install Zip option to the install the zip on your device.

4. It will take you to the sub-menu from where you select the option according to the location of the Zip file.

5. Browse and select the Zip file.

6. Confirm the action.

7. Go back to the main menu and select Reboot System Now option to reboot the device.
